What is a Sewage Pump?

Pump Installation for ADU

Sewage pumps are designed to handle sewage water and solid waste materials, such as tissue paper and human waste. Sometimes called “ejector” pumps, they move sewage to septic tanks or city sewer lines when gravity systems are not viable—for example, in ADUs below the level of the main home or basement bathrooms. Learn more about ADU applications.

In some situations, we recommend grinder pumps—sewage pumps with a grinding mechanism. Although they move a lower volume than standard sewage pumps, they operate at higher pressure, making them suitable for longer distances. Grinder pumps grind solids before discharge, but residential versions are still only meant to handle tissue paper and human waste.

A typical installation might involve two Liberty Grinder Pumps managed by a Duo control panel. With this system, one pump serves as a backup if the other fails, helping to prevent service disruption. The external control panel also alternates usage between pumps, which extends their lifespan.

We have extensive experience installing pump systems in a wide range of residential and septic applications. From simple to complex, we can recommend the right solution for your situation.

What is a Sump Pump?

A Sump Pump is designed to remove pooled water from under a house or in a basement. It typically activates via a float switch when standing water is detected. Sump pumps are not designed to handle solids and should not be used for sewage.

What is a Well Pump?

Well pumps are specifically designed to draw water from underground wells and deliver it to the surface. They differ significantly from sewage and sump pumps in both function and installation. Well pumps are installed inside the well and are connected to the surface to bring water up. Typically, a well system consists of a Well Pump and often a Booster Pump located at the surface, which helps move water from the well to its required destination. It’s important to note that these pumps are not designed to handle solids.

* While a Well Pump alone can sometimes suffice, a Booster Pump is often needed to provide enough power to move water from the well to where it needs to go. Pumps in combination with Pressure Tanks provide required water pressure.

Water Pumps for Water Tanks

Similar to Well Systems, Pumps and Pressure Tanks are often necessary when the water source is from a Water Tank. See our Water Tank Page for more information.
